Fire outbreaks remain a major threat in schools, homes, and communities across Kenya and many developing regions. Rising temperatures, dry conditions, and delayed detection often allow small fires to grow into devastating disasters. Many existing fire detection systems are expensive, require constant power, or are inaccessible to vulnerable communities. This creates a need for an affordable, reliable, and resilient early-warning solution that can operate even during power outages.
S.A.F.E. (Smart Air & Fire Electronics) is a solar-powered fire detection and emergency alert system designed to provide early warning and rapid response during fire incidents. The system combines three sensing technologies: smoke detection, temperature monitoring, and infrared flame detection. An Arduino-based controller continuously analyzes data from these sensors to identify potential fire threats. By combining multiple indicators instead of relying on a single sensor, S.A.F.E. improves reliability and reduces false alarms. When a threat is detected, the system immediately activates a local buzzer alarm and warning indicators while simultaneously sending an SMS alert through a GSM module to designated contacts. This enables rapid emergency response even in areas without internet access. The system is powered by a rechargeable solar energy unit, allowing operation during power outages and making it suitable for schools, homes, community centers, and other vulnerable locations. Future development plans include cloud-based monitoring, mobile application integration, multi-zone fire location tracking, and advanced risk analysis tools to improve safety and resilience.
