GreenCycle Women Initiative

Kenya generates over 22 million tonnes of organic waste annually, yet less than 5% is productively managed. Women, who handle 70% of household and community waste, bear the burden of contaminated environments, health risks, and economic exclusion. They lack access to affordable composting technology, business training, and market linkages to monetize waste. Fragmented waste systems ignore circular economy potential: thousands of tonnes of nutrient-rich organic matter end up in landfills and water sources instead of fertilizing crops and generating income. The result: degraded soils, reduced agricultural productivity, preventable health crises, and missed opportunities for green livelihoods. Without intervention, this cycle perpetuates poverty, gender inequality, and climate vulnerability across Kenya's communities.

GreenCycle Women Initiative is a women-led, community-centered program that transforms organic waste into economic and environmental value through circular economy principles and digital innovation. OUR THREE-PILLAR SOLUTION: 1. Community Composting Hubs Decentralized, women-operated facilities that collect, sort, and process organic waste into nutrient-rich compost. Each hub serves 10–15 villages, processing 50+ tonnes monthly, generating compost for local smallholder farmers while creating 8–12 green jobs per hub. 2. Digital Waste-to-Value Platform ,A mobile-first app (iOS/Android) that enables women entrepreneurs to: track waste inputs and compost yield in real-time; access certification and training modules (waste management, business planning, climate-smart agriculture); connect directly with buyers (farmers, retailers, landscapers); monitor income and impact metrics; and receive market price alerts for composted products and biogas derivatives. 3. Capacity Building & Economic Empowerment , Structured training for 500 women and youth across waste management certification, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and climate-smart farming. Beyond technical skills, we foster peer mentorship networks, access to micro-credit, and pathways to leadership roles in circular economy enterprises. IMPACT & SDG ALIGNMENT: GreenCycle directly advances SDGs 1 (poverty reduction), 5 (gender equality), 8 (decent work), 11 (sustainable cities), 12 (responsible consumption), and 13 (climate action). Within 3 years: - 500 women trained and earning average KES 8,000–15,000/month from composting enterprises - 250,000+ tonnes of organic waste diverted from landfills annually - 150+ tonnes of high-grade compost produced, improving soil health across 2,000+ hectares - 2,000+ smallholder farmers adopting climate-smart, soil-enriched farming practices - 50 composting hubs established across high-waste urban and rural zones INVESTMENT ALLOCATION (KES 5,000,000): Infrastructure & hub setup: 40% (KES 2M) – composting equipment, facilities, solar power - Digital platform development & deployment: 25% (KES 1.25M) - Training & capacity building: 20% (KES 1M) - Monitoring, evaluation & scaling: 15% (KES 750K) This integrated approach ensures women aren't just trained—they become income-earning, climate-action leaders in their communities.
